In the world of recovery, advocacy is more than just speaking up—it’s about creating change, challenging stigma, and offering hope to those still struggling. While national and state-level advocacy efforts play a crucial role, some of the most impactful work happens locally, right in our own communities.

Why Local Advocacy Matters

When people see and hear real stories of recovery in their own towns, from individuals they can relate to, it breaks down misconceptions and opens doors for change. Local advocacy:

Gives a voice to those often unheard – Your personal journey can inspire others to seek help and stay on the path of recovery.
Challenges stigma – By sharing real experiences, we help others see that recovery is possible and should be supported.
Strengthens community resources – Advocacy helps improve policies, expand access to services, and ensure recovery programs receive the support they need.
Creates a ripple effect – When one person steps up to advocate, it encourages others to do the same, creating a culture of support and empowerment.

Becoming a Volunteer Advocate with NMSAS

At NMSAS Recovery Center, we believe in the power of peers supporting peers—and we’re looking for passionate individuals to step up and become leaders in the recovery movement.

That’s why we’ve developed our 2-Day Advocacy Training, designed to equip individuals in recovery with the skills and confidence to:

✔️ Present the NMSAS Advocacy Presentation in communities across Northern Michigan.
✔️ Share their recovery story effectively to inspire hope and change.
✔️ Engage with local organizations, policymakers, and community leaders to expand recovery support.
✔️ Develop a personal advocacy plan to turn passion into action.

This training is more than just a learning experience—it’s a pathway to real impact. As a member of the NMSAS Advocacy Team, you’ll have opportunities to educate, empower, and lead in your own community, all while strengthening your own recovery journey.
